Atelier of Mondriaan

Artists' villages Laren & Blaricum have long been an attraction for artists and creatives. One of the most famous painters was Piet Mondrian. He worked in the former colony hut in 1917, the year in which the art direction “de Stijl” arose. In that year Mondriaan finally broke away from figurative work.
The workshop The former colony hut from the Humanitaire Bosje (located between Noolseweg, Torenlaan and Prof. van Reeslaan) was built around 1900 and placed at its current location in 1927 after an extension with a living area around 1910. The Haags Gemeentemuseum contains two drawings of this hut, as it looked in 1917.
The striking chimney that still adorns the studio's outer wall is very recognizable. Originally the hut was thatched. Mondrian complained in 1917 about the lack of good light in this hut, which was after all not built as a studio.
Practical information The hut is only open to visitors during the annual Atelierroute in Blaricum. The rest of the year, the winner of the Mondriaan Atelier Prize lives and works in the original Hut Van Mondriaan for a period of at least one year.
Would you like to view the hut from outside? Then drive on via Schapendrift 75. The approach route via Eemnesserweg is very inconvenient.
